UK Parking – "It's getting past ridiculous"

UK Campus Housing residents with cars are required to purchase a parking permit. Student parking permits for the 2013-2014 school year (8 months) are $248.00 per year for C-, R- and K-permits which equals a fee of $31.00 per month. Permits may be going up in cost for the 2014-2015 school year Currently if you have two roommates and you move away from campus, add $62.00 to your monthly rent for living far from campus!

All Wassmer Properties buildings have their own parking lots and there is NO EXTRA FEE/CHARGE for a resident parking permit. The parking permit is included for each roommate in the monthly rent.

Even with a permit at the UK parking lots (K lots) at Commonwealth Stadium, there is no guarantee of available parking. In some parking lots, students must remove their cars for special events like home football games.

According to the January 2014 article in the Kentucky Kernel here are the dismal statistics:

K-Lot parking spaces at the Commonwealth Stadium parking as of Jan 2014 4,048
Lost K lot spaces lost over 2014 Spring Break due to construction -249
Lost K lot spaces lost over 2015 Spring Break due to construction -249 -249

That makes the total K Lot spaces available to students that decide to rent way off campus 3,550 parking spaces. It is interesting to note that according to the Kentucky Kernel UK has SOLD 5,083 parking permits as of January 2014. So the Commonwealth Stadium parking lot is OVERSOLD by 1,284 parking spaces for Spring 2014!

Parking on the UK campus is strictly enforced. Towing is expensive. Unpaid tickets can result in financial holds being placed on your registration, grades, and transcripts.

The second phase of the Commonwealth Stadium expansion and renovation project, initially scheduled to begin during the week of March 17-21, has been delayed until the conclusion of spring semester. The second phase is slated to eliminate 374 spaces along the west side of the stadium, in order to accommodate the expansion of the stadium’s plaza area.

A total of 673 parking spaces will be permanently eliminated as a result of this project. The remaining 658 parking spaces used for construction and staging will be returned to the University’s parking inventory in the fall of 2015.
